Money for a better arrange[ment]

My maid she comes from Bengal and she is in debt, on asking her why?

She says "Sir, I decided to marry my daughter in a good family. The whole thing cost me a bit more."

My mom she has similar ideas like you put more money and you get good husband. Such an irony ...no. You are paying more to get better. I mean the guys who is asking for more money is good.

Its becoming such a market. You give gift to the in-laws of your daughters or you are expected to gift when she gets a baby, she enters into a new house and in all sorts of festival. And these same people then criticize those who are killing their unborn daughters.
And our daughters what they do?They don't appose. And they continue to live with the same kind of people because they are family members of the husband. isn't weird you marry a girl and put her in between atleast two strangers. She is expected to adapt according to their ideas, their way of living, their habits. And if she adapt to that sort of arrangement it becomes very successful.

“STILL LIFE” by A.K.Ramanujan

When she left me
after lunch,I read
for a while.
But I suddenly wanted
to look again
and I saw the half-eaten
sandwich,
bread,
lettuce and salami,
all carrying the shape
of her bite.
